Diary of a Mad Scientist
Chapter 8
When the cab pulls up to Lab X Lathyrus comes out to help get everyone moved in. Fallia cringes when she see’s Lathyrus
is holding Volar but she knows not to react. If it weren’t for Neil Fallia would have lost her mind over all of this a long
time ago.
Once everyone is settled in Neil goes to Fallia’s room. Fallia is quite upset because Volar can’t be in her bedroom
like the twins are. Neil assures her that he will be sleeping in the basement bedroom with Volar, so she has nothing to
worry about. Neil made sure of this by talking Lathyrus into giving him access back to that area before he went to pick
up Fallia and the kids.
It ties knots in Fallia’s stomach when she see’s Lathyrus interacting with her children. Nobody likes how Lathyrus
holds the babies. He looks at them like they are lab specimens and never cradles them in his arms.
Karen is afraid of Lathyrus and what he may do next, but that’s not the reason she takes such good care of Owen. Karen
was raised in foster homes. Pauline was the first person Karen ever felt a bond with so Owen feels like family to her. Karen
realizes her situation is not good, but taking care of Owen brings her happiness she’s never known before now. Lathyrus
informed Karen that Owen is his child, but even that doesn’t bother her. Mainly because Lathyrus doesn’t seem to be the
least bit interested in Owen.
Neil and Fallia find it very difficult to keep their hands off of each other. They embrace every moment they get to be
alone. Little do they know, Lathyrus has seen them show affection towards each other, more than once, over the last few
months. They also don’t realize Lathyrus knows they grew up close to each other and there are reasons Fallia was the one
chosen to come to Plutarian.
The time arrives for Volar to become a child. Neil and Fallia have a private little birthday celebration for him late
at night when everyone else is sleeping. Fallia can’t believe how fast little Volar is growing up on her.
Fallia is more than shocked when she see’s Volar develops hair after his age transformation. Her jaw drops open and she
points but she can’t say anything. Unaware of a problem; Volar grabs a piece of cake and runs into the dinning room with it.
Neil hugs Fallia and tells her they need to hold everything together so not to upset Volar. He assures her they will talk
about this in private after Volar goes to bed.
Fallia agrees because she doesn’t want to make Volar think anything is wrong with him. Neil and Fallia
join Volar at the dinning room table and act as if nothing is wrong. Once Volar is tucked away in bed Neil returns to
Fallia’s room so they can talk. Neil tries to calm her down, but Fallia is infuriated. She knows Lathyrus is behind this
and she wants to get to the bottom of it. Neil agrees to watch over Zola and Zula while Fallia goes to confront Lathyrus.
Fallia is surprised to find Lathyrus in one of the labs so late at night. She bursts in and demands to know why her son
developed hair after his age transformation. Lathyrus laughs as he tells her he wondered what effects his experiments would
have on Volar. Fallia quickly grows tired of Lathyrus being so smug and threatens to turn him into the counsel. He replies
to her with another burst of laughter. Then tells her not to worry, he hasn’t done anything to hurt her precious son and
that the hair should be gone by the time Volar reaches his teens. He steps away from the computer and tells Fallia to go
ahead and report him to the counsel if she pleases. Lathyrus places a firm hand on Fallia’s shoulder once she sits down and
recommends that she listen to him very carefully before typing up that report. Fallia is shocked by what she hears next...
Fallia races back to Neil and can barely contain herself. She sits Neil down and begins to tell him everything she just learned.
The counsel is not who everyone thinks they are. A secret society of males has slowly been able to take the counsel over in the past
20 years. They have used the species genetic problems to make the Evilican society and laws what they are today. Fallia tells Neil
she threatened to take this news to the Evilican people but Lathyrus stopped her in her tracks. She goes on to explain that Lathyrus
reminded her of the laws preventing other species to mate with Evilican woman and that he knows about the love her and Neil share.
Fallia didn’t understand how this was supposed to stop her because Lathyrus didn’t have any proof. This is when Lathyrus made the
picture very clear to her. He asked her who she thought the father of her infant girls is, she replied saying she is sure they
are Lathyrus’s. He began an evil laugh as he explained to her that they are in fact Neil’s children. Then he reminded her of how
everyone had to submit DNA samples and that Neil would be dead before the truth could be proven to the Evilican people if she talks.
Fallia and Neil are torn between feeling happy and afraid about everything they have just learned…
