Diary of a Mad Scientist

Chapter 4

Tosha and Doc have just opened a small clinic in Plutarian. Neil delivers copies of the Doctor’s records the lab has for everyone on the planet. At first glance Neil thinks the couple is human, but after taking a closer look he can see their black alien eyes. He’s very curious about what species they are, but feels it isn’t polite to ask.

Lathyrus permits Pauline and Karen to eat meals with himself and Neil, but has instructed them not to speak unless spoken to. Lucky for them Neil seems to have a lot of questions about Earth and Humans. The ladies have grown to really like Neil, but they also feel sorry for him. Neil doesn’t seem to realize how much he is treated like a second class citizen by Lathyrus and the woman wonder what it must have been like to have been raised by the Evilican species.

Lathyrus has taken over total care of the Cow Plant. He makes it a point to keep Neil busy so it seems like Lathyrus is doing Neil a favor by helping with it. Poor Neil doesn’t realize it’s exactly what Lathyrus wants.

Lathyrus has started growing strange plants in the lab. When Neil asked Lathyrus about them he is told they are being grown for genetic testing. The answer leaves Neil with a funny feeling in his gut, but he knows not to question Lathyrus further.

Neil begins to notice that Pauline and Karen are usually in the basement when Lathyrus is working in the labs. He also realizes that the ladies are never upstairs period unless Lathyrus is near by. He’s not quite sure how to take these feelings, because he’s never distrusted an Evilican like this before now.

Pauline is scared because Lathyrus pulled her from the basement to the upstairs bedroom. All he has told her is that he needs to run some tests. She tries to ease her mind by concentrating on the design in the wallpaper, but it isn’t working. Pauline can’t help but to wonder what he has in mind while she awaits his return to the room.

A few days later Pauline is allowed to return to the ladies normal routine. When she and Karen have a moment alone in the court yard Pauline fills Karen in on what happened. Lathyrus made her drink some fluid that kept her heavily drugged. She came in and out of consciousness but remembers Lathyrus mumbling something about the new boolprop merging sim method he was trying on her. The ladies have no clue what he meant by that but it scares them tremendously.

Since Neil has been working so hard lately he decides to take the evening off and ask Fallia to meet him at Galaxy Bowl. They eat grilled ribs for dinner, bowl and dance, but Neil can tell something is on her mind. He asks her if everything is ok and she admits that she’s worried because Lathyrus has asked her to bring Volar in for DNA testing. Neil assures her that the tests they run will be harmless to Volar, but in the back of his mind he too wonders what Lathyrus wants with the toddler. Neil gives her a hug and offers to rub her back.

As Neil rubs Fallia’s shoulders he can’t help but to think about how much he loves the feel of her soft skin. She looks so beautiful in the glow of the dance floor lights. Every fiber of his being wants to turn Fallia around and kiss her, but he knows he can’t. He has to be happy just to have her as his friend.

A couple of nights later Neil got a call from Doc asking him to meet at Techno Clothing. Once there Doc tells Neil that his people are well known as the Visitor species. This is because they visit other planets and help to solve problems. Doc then tells Neil that while this is true there is more to his species then meets the eye. Doc explains that his species has the ability to see and know everything, but they have to wait for the correct sequence of events before they can change anything. Neil asks why he is being given this information Doc informs Neil that they need his help. Doc goes on to tell Neil that they have been keeping an eye on the Evilican species for many years, but he is not at liberty to tell Neil why yet. All he can say is that he needs Neil to get copies of Lathyrus’s lab files to him as soon as possible.
