Diary of a Mad Scientist

Chapter 1

Plutarian is a harsh desert like planet. It's taken the Evilican species years to set it up properly for a colony. They began populating the planet and getting it ready to serve their purposes a year before Lathyrus arrived.

(The various buildings pictured that are not mine can be found in the Out There neighborhood at Neighborly Sims)

Lab X is a fully functional building that provides both work and living areas. Inner court yards are built into the design so the occupants can enjoy time outside without being directly in the blistering sunlight. All of the labs spread across the Universe are of similar design.

A human scientist, Neil Landchild, was one of the first to arrive on Plutarian, and he lives in Lab X. Neil was raised by the Evilican species and has never seen another human. The Evilican’s consider Neil to be special because they fed him smart milk as a baby and his IQ is above any human they have ever encountered. He is looking forward to meeting and working with Lathyrus.

The first thing Lathyrus did when arriving to Lab X was review the records Neil has been keeping. Lathyrus doesn’t fully trust Neil, like the other Evilican's do, because he is a human. Lathyrus was quite disappointed when he learned he had been assigned to work with such an insignificant species; nevertheless that ‘it’ was considered to be a scientist.

As Lathyrus read over Neil’s work on a project called Elixir of Life he became very curious about something Neil accidentally created called a Cow Plant. This plant is supposed to produce the same substance used in Elixir of Life that prolongs life. It even gives you more time to live, but there are unfinished notes about what the drawbacks are. Lathyrus knew he had to get to the bottom of this so he went straight to Neil.

Neil told Lathyrus that the cow plant only produces the substance after it’s eaten another life form. Neil explained how he discovered this one day when he missed feeding it. He saw the Cow Plant offer the secretary a piece of birthday cake. When she went to take it, the plant ate her. Neil said he tried to stop it but he couldn’t get there in time to save her. Neil already knew the substance was in the cows DNA but he didn’t realize it would produce it in large quantities until that time.

Neil asked Lathyrus to watch from the kitchen window while he fed the plant and explained how important it was to know exactly what he was doing before attempting this on his own. Lathyrus didn’t appreciate Neil’s lack of confidence in him, but he obliged him anyway.

Lathyrus didn’t understand Neil’s objection to the cow plant eating one life form while giving so many others a chance to live longer. They argued about it for hours before Neil agreed to let Lathyrus send his findings to the higher authorities on their home planet.

Little did Neil know that Lathyrus wasn’t going to report the cow plant at all, he just wanted full control over the project. After pretending to send the fake report Lathyrus told Neil no further work was to be done on the project, except for keeping the Cow Plant alive by feeding it non living meat. Neil has no clue that his victorious feelings are in vain.

The next logical step was to get started on the genetic work they came to Plutarian to do. Neil asked Lathyrus if it was ok to start interviewing and scheduling the species, who came to be part of the colony, for exams and lab work. Lathyrus agreed and even suggested that Neil take a few days to go out into the field to do the beginning interviews.
